During my college days at Bhadrak College, the person who inspired me the most was Laxmi Mahapatra — fondly known as Laxmi Bhai. What started as a bond with a student leader soon turned into a deep family connection. I became like a family member, receiving so much love and blessings from Bhauja, Mousha, Maushi, and others. Mama Kalia and Suman were very young then, but we shared a close bond too.
Laxmi Bhai was not just a leader — he was a true son of Odisha. A fearless politician, a proud Odia, and a man of strong principles. He was deeply patriotic, always clear in his thoughts, and never afraid to speak the truth. Beyond politics, he was a passionate reader, a powerful speaker, and a brilliant organiser. He worked selflessly for the poor and also promoted sports with great enthusiasm.
But life was not fair to him. Despite having all the qualities of a great leader, he never got the chance to serve as an elected representative. The political parties and leaders he supported used his strengths but never gave him the position he truly deserved. It’s painful to say, but they took him for granted — even betrayed him in many ways.
His journey as a student leader was remarkable. As one of the founding members of ABVP in Odisha, and later through his association with Biju Patnaik and BJD, he left a strong mark. From Bhadrak College to Utkal University, he was known for his fearless voice and unshakable self-respect. Sadly, these very qualities made others insecure, and they kept him away from power.
His love for books, newspapers, and music was unmatched. His library was like a treasure for me — a place where I found peace and knowledge. Even when he was unwell, our talks would flow from literature to politics, and his insights were always sharp and deep.
His passing has left a huge void in Bhadrak and in Odisha. It’s hard to imagine finding another leader like him — someone with such wisdom, humility, and a real connection with people. For me, it’s a personal loss. Losing Bhauja, Laxmi Bhai, and Tukuna Bhaina in the same year has been heartbreaking.
Life is full of struggles, and sometimes, even the best people don’t get what they truly deserve. But I will always hold on to the memories, the love, and the lessons I got from him.
Love you, Laxmi Bhai. Missing your warmth and unconditional love. May your soul rest in peace. My heart felt tribute to Bhauja and Laxmi bhai on his first punya tithi.
