Ranchi (KCN), September 26, 2025:
The Ghasi community of Jharkhand has announced a decisive step in their struggle for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Soon after Durga Puja, a five-member delegation will leave for Delhi to submit a memorandum to the President of India, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and the Union Tribal Affairs Minister, pressing for recognition as a tribal community. Upon returning, they will chart out the framework for a statewide movement and formally announce its launch.
Vijay Shankar Nayak, Central Vice-President of the Adivasi Moolvasi Janadhikar Manch and former legislative candidate, emphasized that a grave injustice was committed when the Ghasi community, recognized as a tribal group in the 1901 census, was arbitrarily removed from the tribal list in 1950 and placed under the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. He pointed out that the community continues to remain economically, socially, and educationally backward. Granting ST status, he argued, would open doors to education, employment, reservation benefits, and development schemes.
Nayak asserted, “Our demand is fair, just, and based on historical evidence. We urge the Central Government to act swiftly and restore our rightful place. If no steps are taken, we will intensify our voice through peaceful protests.”
He added that the Ghasi community has been consistently raising this issue for years, and recently submitted memoranda and emails to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. If ignored further, leaders have warned of a statewide agitation, including peaceful rallies, demonstrations, and non-violent measures.
The community has appealed to all political parties, social organizations, and the general public to join their movement and support their rightful cause
