Bhubaneswar:( KCN):
Former Minister and President of the Sukinda Region Chromite Khadan Mazdoor Sangh, Er. Pritiranjan Gharai, has raised serious allegations of irregularities in the sale of chromite by the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) and has sought a high-level investigation into the matter.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, dated January 6, 2025, Gharai alleged large-scale price manipulation in the sale of chrome ore from the Sukinda mines. According to him, OMC generally sells chromite through monthly auctions, but over the past year, the –40% grade chromite has reportedly been sold at a fixed rate of around ₹9,000 per tonne, raising serious questions about transparency and fairness.
Gharai pointed out that while global market prices of minerals fluctuate regularly, the price of this particular grade has remained stagnant. He further highlighted a glaring price disparity, stating that 40% grade chromite is being sold at ₹21,000–₹22,000 per tonne, while higher grades fetch even more, making the low pricing of –40% grade highly suspicious.
The former minister alleged the existence of a “syndicate” involving industrial houses from within and outside Odisha, certain OMC officials, and political elements, accusing them of tender fixing and manipulation. He claimed that due to this alleged scam, the State Government is suffering losses amounting to hundreds of crores of rupees.
Demanding immediate action, Gharai urged the Chief Minister to order an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and ensure strict punishment for those found guilty. He also warned that if no action is taken, he would be compelled to seek judicial intervention in the coming days.
The allegations have sparked concern over the functioning of OMC and the management of Odisha’s valuable mineral resources, with calls growing for greater accountability and transpareny
