Allegations of massive illegal sand mining across various parts of Odisha have sparked serious concern among environmentalists, civil society groups, and local residents, who claim that the state’s natural resources are being systematically looted by sand mafias and brokers.
Despite existing laws and regulations governing minor mineral extraction, illegal sand mining is reportedly continuing unabated in several riverbeds, causing severe environmental damage and resulting in substantial revenue loss to the state exchequer. Locals allege that sand is being extracted and transported openly, often during night hours, with little fear of enforcement.
The issue has now snowballed into a major public debate, with questions being raised about the role and responsibility of the authorities concerned. The names of Minister Bibhuti Jena, Minister Sampad Swain, and the Director of Minor Minerals have figured in public discussions, with critics demanding clarity, accountability, and strict action against those involved in the alleged irregularities.
Environmental experts warn that unchecked sand mining leads to riverbank erosion, depletion of groundwater levels, and long-term ecological imbalance, directly impacting agriculture, drinking water sources, and livelihoods of local communities.
Activists allege that a nexus between sand mafias, middlemen, and influential elements is allowing the illegal activity to flourish. Several social and environmental organisations have demanded a high-level, independent inquiry to identify those responsible and to dismantle the alleged network facilitating illegal mining.
So far, there has been no official response from the concerned ministers or the Directorate of Minor Minerals regarding the allegations. Citizens and environmental groups have urged the Odisha government to take immediate corrective measures, strengthen monitoring mechanisms, and ensure strict enforcement of mining laws to safeguard the state’s natural resources.
As public pressure mounts, the spotlight remains firmly on the state administration to act decisively and demonstrate its commitment to environmental protection and transparent governance.
