Rajdhani College organises National-Level Conventional Debate on ‘Participatory vs Representative Democracy’

Chaitanya, the Debating Society of Rajdhani College, successfully organized a national-level conventional debate on the topic ‘Participatory Democracy is a Better Form of Governance than Representative Democracy’. The event aimed to provide a platform for debaters from various colleges and universities across the country to showcase their debating skills, engage in intellectual discourse, and foster healthy competition.
Mr. Abhay Kumar, Deputy Director General (ICCR), G20 graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and inspired the audience with his experiences as a debater in his college days at Kirori Mal College, and his journey thereof as a diplomat. Mr. Kumar encouraged the students to participate in different activities at college level and find their calling. In his address, Principal Prof. Rajesh Giri highlighted the need for discussion and debate, while emphasising on the importance of the topic. The convenor, Dr Rachna Sethi, highlighted the role of college Deb Socs, including Chaitanya in giving students an opportunity to articulate thoughts, ideas and opinions in a fearless manner. She said that while debate has its start off point in deliberation, it should continue beyond the confines of debate competition through dialogue and discussion.
Vichar Manthan 5.0 was conducted as per format of conventional debate, and 25 teams participated in the national level competition. Dr. Deepti Bhardwaj, Assistant Professor, Ram Lal Anand College, DU and Shri Rajiv Mandal, In-charge, Editorial Page, Rashtriya Sahara were the esteemed judges. The judges congratulated the participants while sharing their valuable thoughts on the topic and highlighting the role of language, sensitivity and expression in debates.
Priyanshu Chauhan and Sudeep Krishna from Jamia Milia Islamia won the rolling trophy as winners of Best Team. Shivam and Shushank Gupta from Kirori Mal College bagged the second prize, while Saurabh and Yashi from IIMC won the third prize. Shreya Shukla from Shivaji College was the Best Interjector while Vasavi Mahajan, VIPS, GGSIPU received the Special Mention for their excellent performances.
