Renowned Sand Artist Joins Hands with German Consulate for Beach Plastic Pollution Awareness Workshop
Bhubaneswar,(KCN): In a proactive move against the global crisis of plastic pollution, an impactful awareness workshop is set to unfold on the pristine shores of Puri, Odisha. According to UN data, a staggering 19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste infiltrate aquatic ecosystems yearly, threatening marine life and ecosystems worldwide. Alarming projections suggest this could double or triple by 2040, while recycling rates languish below 10 percent.
Addressing this pressing issue, the workshop, led by Padma Shri awardee Shri Sudarsan Pattnaik, renowned for his mesmerizing sand art, aims to convey the urgent need for reducing daily plastic consumption. Students from Puri district schools will actively participate, crafting intricate sand art using plastic waste collected from the very beach that has witnessed its detrimental impact in recent weeks.
The workshop not only accentuates the severity of plastic pollution but also provides a unique learning opportunity for young students. As the future custodians of our planet’s aquatic ecosystems, these students are crucial in shaping the response to the plastic menace.
German Consulate General, Babara Voss, expressed enthusiasm for Odisha’s initiatives in combatting plastic pollution. “I am happy to join the drive and contribute to the cause which needs a global and bigger push. I look forward to witnessing great sand art combined with plastic leftovers on the blue flag beach in Puri,” said Voss.
