Bhubaneswar, September 5: Teachers’ Day was celebrated at the Red Cross Bhawan here on Saturday by the revolutionary social organisation Samara Kranti Sena, with eminent personalities from different fields attending the programme.
Special Director General of Police Gopabandhu Mallik attended the event as the Chief Guest. Eminent journalist and Rashtriya Patrakar Mahasangha & indian fedederation of small and medium Newspapers, New delhi National president Dr. Pabitra Mohan Samantaray was the Chief Speaker. Senior Odisha Government administrator Sanjay Kumar Mishra attended as the Special Guest, while former Vice-Chancellor of Fakir Mohan University Dr. Kumarbar Das was another Special Guest.
Former Ravenshaw College Former Dean prof Dr Niranjan Barik attended as the Guest of Honour. The programme was conducted under the chairmanship of noted physicist and academic Dr. Sushant Das. Director of the organisation Sudhanshu Sekhar Mahapatra, founder-editor of Pratikar Odia newspaper Subhashish Mishra, and Gandhian Sarvodaya organiser Gauranga Mahapatra, among others, were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pabitra Mohan Samantaray said that September 5 marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President, renowned philosopher, scholar and dedicated teacher. The day is observed as Teachers’ Day in his honour.
He recalled that when Dr. Radhakrishnan became President in 1962, his students wished to celebrate his birthday. He suggested instead that the day should be observed as Teachers’ Day to honour the entire teaching fraternity.
The speakers emphasised that Teachers’ Day should not merely be limited to cultural programmes, dances and songs. Students should express their gratitude to teachers and mentors through meaningful gestures such as handmade cards, flowers and messages of appreciation.
At the programme, school heads, teachers and scholars from different parts of Odisha were honoured with the Shikshashree Samman, while volunteers, students and social organisers were felicitated with the Sevashree Samman for their contributions to society and education.
Samajain editor Manoj Seth, organisation members Dr. Soumitra Kar, Dr. Pramod Kishore Parida, Shankar Behera, Mukesh Singh and Harekrushna Baral, among others, attended the programme. Basudev Parida proposed the vote of thanks.
